Simply Railways

Railway modelling is a hobby that many train enthusiasts and collectors take part in throughout the world. The popular hobby consists of building replicas of an entire rail transport system at a much smaller scale or ratio.

Within the scale models many items are often reproduced from the locomotives and their rolling stock to tracks, buildings, streetcars, signals, canyons, and hills.Outside of the train system itself, which includes the trains and their cars and the tracks, most railway models contain enough landscaping features that if you were to take a picture close up of the scene you could not tell it was a model.

Model Locomotives.

Locomotives have come a long way in the model railway world since they used to operate on clockwork systems, along what was known as carpet railways in the 1800s. Even with the invention of electric trains during the early 1900’s most train models were still crude, up until the last fifty years when locomotives started to take on a more accurate representation of their real

counterparts.

Model Railway Rolling Stock.

There are many different sizes of railway models each of which are referred to as different scales. A scale is the ratio of the size of the train to the real life size of a train. The most popular scale is the OO scale which has an engine height of 50mm and a length of about 100mm to 300m. Also popular are the scales of G, O, and S.

Model Railways Scenery.

It is common in the railway modelling world for expert railway modellers to build model scenery that resembles the scenery of a historical time period or a historical location. The need for exact scale replication often makes the task one that can take years to complete, as well as careful precision throughout the planning and construction process.
